How to overcome limiting beliefs

How to explore your limiting beliefs

We all have limiting believes. These are the stories we tell ourselves, which ultimately hold us back from being happy and achieving what we want to achieve.

 

Here’s a short exercise you can do to help explore your limiting believes

 

1) On a piece of paper, divide the page into three columns. In the first column write a list of up to 6 limiting beliefs you hold about yourself. These limiting beliefs might be the stories you repeat to yourself or other people who are close to you. Eg ‘I’m not the creative type’ ‘I find it difficult to meet people’. Try using the sentence starters ‘I’m not . . . . ‘ or ‘I can’t . . . .’

 

2) In the second column. Take each of the limiting belief statements in turn, and write down what actual evidence you have for believing the statement. What is your evidence for believing the statement and holding this belief.

 

3) In column 3, write down evidence AGAINST each limiting belief. Ask yourself: ‘Is this true in a factual way?’ Use your past experience to explore this statement fully, consider what real proof you have that might refute it. If you’re struggling imagine you are arguing the case with a friend or someone you respect. And use this column to also look at the evidence in column 2 in a more skeptical way.

 

4) Now ask yourself how helpful these beliefs are for your happiness.

 

Consider what these beliefs add to your life and how they impact your behaviour and happiness. Do you want to hold these beliefs about yourself? If you don’t could you let go of them? What would help you to begin this process. Think about your big intention / goal and visualise how changing your beliefs is likely to impact you achieving your big goal.
